The Autumn Winter season opens up the wardrobe doors to a new world of possibility. A colder world, but one that weaves a narrative with more layers than a t-shirt and jeans.

It’s single-digits Celsius out there, but feel safe that searching for winter appropriate mid-layers is backed by thousands of years of knitting –the warm, fuzzy feeling of mohair against frostbite is part of the rich tapestry of human beings turning plants and animals into insulation.

DRIES VAN NOTEN - KNITTED MOCK SWEATER

If there’s one man to trust when it comes to adding colour or print to the typically muted AW season, it’s Dries Van Noten. Dries weaves some colour into oversized knitwear with the Tanish Mock Knit. Multi-coloured wools run through the high-necked, dropped-shouldered piece, resulting in a very wearable statement for the season ahead.

SASQUATCHFABRIX - BLACK MOHAIR CREWNECK SWEATER

Knits don’t have to be all clashing colours and patterns. Sasquatchfabrix take the essence of the AW season and render it in black mohair, complete with ribbed neck, raw cuffs and drop-tail hem.

ADER ERROR - COMPANY ROLL NECK

Korean creative outfit Ader Error place paramount importance on seasonal knits – the Company Roll Neck’s soft ivory wool construction is given a typically Ader graphic treatment, with their embroidered take on Paramount pictures iconic logo. A dropped shoulder places this front and centre in AW19’s best interpretations of the classic roll neck sweater.

NEEDLES - MOHAIR CARDIGAN

Needles bring an array of mohair cardigans to AW19. Bold patterns in a wool-mohair blend are a recurring theme for the label, and are a surprisingly versatile way to add a splash of colour. Working well as transitional mid-layers as the seasons change for the warmer, the relaxed, shaggy mohair silhouette stands to get a lot of mileage year-round.

ACNE STUDIOS - KAI WAFFLE STRIPE JUMPER

Bold colours on classic shapes cut through Europe’s seasonal darkness and add the contemporary twist Acne Studios are known for. A waffle knit stripe and the vibrant palette is a more modern alternative to a traditional fair isle knit, and one that attracts less uneducated ‘nice Christmas jumper’ remarks.

ARIES - PAISLEY CARDIGAN

Aries contemporise grandad-chic with their slouchy, mohair take on the cardigan. Red paisley print is set against a mid-brown background and ribbing, including cut-out details to the bottom of the placket.

CRAIG GREEN – RIBBED CONTRAST WOOL JUMPER

Craig Green’s workwear-inspired catalogue is memorable for all its tasselled, padded, sculptural artistry – and rightly so – but Green’s mastery of the modern contemporary menswear silhouette is just as evident in basics like the Ribbed Contrast Wool Jumper. Simple ribbing becomes an understated talking point with a 50/50 colour split, embroidered hole to the upper chest and subtly elongated sleeves.
