Where the rhythm of seafaring meets that of the urban sphere, PUMA x Nanamica solidifies both into the wardrobe of the 21st Century wearer. For their sophomore collaborative collection, the two spearheads unite to unveil a roster of versatile, minimal staples, spanning footwear, apparel and outerwear.
Founded in 2003 by designer Eiichiro Homma – whose CV boasts the likes of Goldwin, Helly Hansen and Japan’s division of The North Face Purple Label – Nanamica is driven to coalesce “sport functionality and fashion sensibilities.” Translating to ‘house of the seven seas’, the Tokyo based label looks to the ocean as a source of both lifeforce and influence – a brand rooted in the classicism of nautical inspired wear. Moreover, a philosophy of ‘one ocean, all lands’, strives to unite eclectic influences under one umbrella, straddling the realms of utility and sport. In both early production and final delivery, Nanamica looks beyond the binaries of nationality, age or gender to craft unisex, timeless garments.
Their partnership with PUMA, therefore, is one of sensical choice. Established in Bavaria in 1948, Rudolf Dassler’s label supporting the athlete with the eye of the craftsman, and 75 years on, this remains resolute. With its leaping puma insignia a fitting tribute, their quest for material innovation is a journey paved with power, grace and speed – a peerless reputation that stands both on and off the pitch or the asphalt.
Joining forces, these two kingpins subsequently navigate the modern maze of industry saturation with unflinching truth to their brand codes, creating uniforms primed for life and ready for adventure.
In muted palettes of slate, navy and charcoals, easy-to-style essentials come elevated in durable gabardine and heavyweight chambray. Cut from the same cloth and detailing the telescoped history of both labels, this collection renders a wardrobe primed for life.
Everyday tailoring comes in the form of woven trousers and coats, fleshed from the desire to “make clothes that are both comfortable and stylish for everyday use,” notes Homma. In the same vein, look to the co-branded box fit t-shirts and dual hoodie silhouettes that stand humble in the purity of their execution; the latter, featuring central pocketing, an adjustable drawcord hood and finished in timeless pinstripe.
A similar logic was applied with a reimagining of PUMA's seminal Clyde model. Originally released in 1973 as one of their earliest athletic endorsed sneakers, these collaborative iterations arrive in a pair of monochromatic colourways. Debossed branding meets a tactile trademark Formstrip, in crafted suede, while its exterior, comes harnessed within waterproof GORE-TEX coated leather and responsive rubber tooling.
For PUMA x Nanamica, the pairing stands boldly in the liminal space between technical prowess and pragmatism – embrace both with their latest collection.
